EPISODE ONE - Victorian England
|
Episode one begins with a geographical exploration of England on a world map. The children are informed about
England's connection to Europe and the different areas of Great Britain that make up the United Kingdom. Throughout
the brief introduction, maps and informative images are screened on the backdrop.
Children in the studio are introduced in smart modern day clothes. Julia however, is wearing a pretty pink Victorian
dress with a hairstyle of the era. She reads out an invitation inviting the children to join her for a traditional English tea
party that requires the children to come dressed in their "Sunday Best."
Information about freak floods that
caused England's coastline to break off
from Europe and form the English
Channel.

The children are excited by the invitation and Julia gathers them around her to create some very special magic. They
hold hands tightly and join in a magic rhyme. There is a smoke effect and the children are transported to a traditional
Victorian tea party set in an English country garden. The girls can be seen wearing pretty dresses and bonnets and the
boys are in smart jackets. The table is laid out for traditional English afternoon tea.
The children are reminded of their manners as they are seated at the table. Each child has a place setting and is filmed
tasting the culinary delicacies of Victorian English cuisine.
Tea is offered to the children to drink and whilst they sip the hot beverage, Julia tells the story about the history of tea
and how it was transported from China and became so popular in England. The story concludes with the introduction
of iced tea in America. Throughout the tea party we hear traditional English tea dance string music playing.

The next segment opens with a Victorian parlour scene during which the children find out how
people in England entertained themselves in an age without television, computers and electricity.
The children will be filmed participating in games and activities from over a hundred years ago
including wooden hula hoops, stilt walking and croquet.
After the activities, Julia invites the children to join her in songs that originated from England. The
songs and rhymes are accompanied by music. The final song introduces a dog puppet and the children
are given lightweight boards to hold up which have animals painted on them with their faces cut out. The
children's own faces can be seen through the holes in the boards. Images of different dogs are shown on
the blue screen at points through the song.
